SUPPORT
TOWERS
Support Towers are made of 2 Metre lengths of polypropylene
drain pipe. Whilst not noted for its extreme greenness, it's large, light,
cheap and lasts for years. The pipes weigh about 300gm each and are held
together in triangulated structures with gardening wire. The really large
structures only weigh 10kg or so and are quite safe even if they fall on
someone as the weight is distributed through the structure. The few pipes
we've broken over the years have been re-used for all sorts of things.
Some bits are holding up my desk at work, one bit got used to sleeve the
drive hub in a pedal generator, and one piece was even used by a neighbour
as part of a sink drain!
This tower which was used in a night time procession
at the 2000 Big Green Gathering reached a height of nearly 10 Metres when
carried at shoulder height by three people, making it easily the tallest
mobile object on the site.
