At this year's Hes Fes, we did some Renewable Energy workshops
including a lengthy practical Twirly Hub Disc session, ran Lantern
Workshops and built plastic drainpipe towers for a procession. Due to the
weather, the towers got used for the Carnival daytime procession and only
got together with the lanterns as decor for the main marquee in the evening.
Our Children's Pedal Generators
did daily sessions which were as popular as ever.
The Hub Disc Workshop over
ran its time slot by about two days; it's surprising how long it takes
to decide on a layout, mark and drill the disc and then solder the connections.
However, at the end six people had made hub disc things and four of them
used new LED patterns I hadn't tried before!
We got a nice bit of site next to the stream (and the
Giant Hogweed) for the SEASON Dome which we used for workshops and some
of the pedal generator sessions when the weather was bad.
The
first version of the tall tower was a bit over ambitious,
aiming at nearly 8 metres tall with only a 1 metre triangular section;
it stood up but started to go banana shaped so we had to take one of the
2 metre tall octohedrons down to only 1 metre. That gave it more strength
while only losing a metre of height, and the modified version made it easily
around the procession route.
Patrick from SEASON and some of the home educators made
a small icosahedron as a model, then made a quick and well organised job
of building the full sized one:
